NRM Youth have voiced support for constitutional amendment
National Resistance Movement (NRM) youths have unveiled the “gikwateko” campaign calling for the amendment of Article 102 (b) of the constituion. If amended, President Yoweri Museveni, the Chairperson of NRM shall be eligible to stand in 2021.
“Gikwateko” means “touch it” and is a direct opposite of a campaign occasioned by opposition parties that move with the “k’ogikwatako” (“don’t touch it”) slogan.
The NRM Youth campaign was launched on Monday in Rubaga by the NRM Social Media activists (NRM SOMA) who appeared with yellow bandanas on their heads opposing the red ones worn by opposition leaders.
Nsangiranabo Erasmus the chairperson of NRM SOMA says that the yellow colour signifies peace and unity.
“Those fighting the removal of the Age Limit are those involved in personal clashes with President Museveni. If they think he is not capable, they should present their eligible candidates to contest against President Museveni in the coming 2021 free elections conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission,” Erasmus said.
The youth who say that they believe President Museveni is still strong and capable say they shall “touch it” and if opposition persists they shall even write their names in the Constitution. They add that President Museveni contributed to the making of these laws and amending it wouldn’t be a problem. “We won’t allow anyone to intimidate us over this (age limit removal support), we shall ensure it is changed,” says Ibrahim Kitata the NRM national vice chairperson Central region.
Tamale Mirundi the Presidential press advisor asked the opposition not to waste time with the t’ogikwatako campaign. “The Constitution will be changed no matter what. Museveni is like the pope, and we shall give him more time because it is us that vote for him. A thief does not tell you what padlock you should buy” he said.
