One person has been confirmed dead and 17 others are still nursing injuries following an early morning accident that occurred along the Ntinda-Kiwatule road in Kampala.
Godfrey Sekaya, the OC traffic Kira Road Police Station says that the accident occurred at 8:30 when a lorry registration number UAX 495M carrying stone aggregates and heading to Ntinda, lost control and knocked a taxi registration number UAV 469R before ramming into nine other cars that were stuck in traffic jam.
One motorcycle caught fire and was burnt down following the accident.
Six of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Kampala Independent Hospital while others were rushed Mulago National Referral Hospital.
The accident paralyzed traffic on the usually busy road for more than three hours.
According to the Uganda Red Cross Society, all the people injured in the accident have been taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment.
“I saw him ramming into cars when he lost control,” said Fred Ayebazibwe an eye witness.
The District Police Commander Kira Road Michael Kasigire says that the unidentified driver of the lorry is on the run. He says that the lorry was in a dangerous mechanical condition, a reason it could have lost control.
