Following a damning petition by recently sacked lecturers at Makerere, the Parliament of Uganda is set to investigate the Ivory Tower, looking into the myriad of allegations made in the petition.

The staff said they had been unfairly sacked and would want their dismissal reversed.

“Many of us here have been suspended for over two years without any fair hearing and we have never received written letters of suspension, termination or dismissal,” James Ocita the leader of the sacked group told Parliamentary officials.

Sources in the officer of the Speaker Hon. Rebecca Kadaga say that the investigation shall be conducted by the Education Committee of Parliament. The matter shall be looked at beginning on Tuesday January 8, 2019.

“The Members of Parliament at the moment are not around since Parliament is on recess. But I can assure you that when we resume next week, we shall handle this case with urgency on the floor,” Speaker Kadaga told the lecturers.

In an unprecedented move, Makerere University sacked 45 lecturers a few days ago, citing among other issues, indiscipline, absconding from duty and alcoholism. Among those who faced the axe was controversial researcher Dr.Stella Nyanzi, who is currently in jail.
