Reliable sources in the security circles have told us that the four journalists are accused of working with wrong elements from foreign entities.
They are said to have bought drugs worth UGX5 million from government health facilities and were.
A source privy to the operation, says some of the drugs were found in Sserwajja’s home, which explains the arrest of his wife Vivian.
Vivian Nakaliika is a Communication Officer in Charge of Health Promotion and Behavioral Change in the Ministry of Health.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango said that Mrs Sserwanja was arrested to record a statement on how government drugs ended up at their home.
“We found 14 boxes of government medicine including Hepatitis drugs at Mr. Sserwanja’s home. We are waiting for him to come but he is dodging, he has been saying he is coming,” Onyango said.
Robert Ssempala, the Chairman of the Human Rights Network for Journalist (HRNJ), broke the news of the arrest of the journalists saying “Last night security operatives surrounded the home of Solomon Sserwanja, a journalist with NBS TV.
“However he was not in the house and has since arrested his wife Vivian Nakaliika Sserwanja,” he said in the wee hours of Thursday adding that, “It has also arrested two other journalists working with BBC.”
He confirmed that they are being detained at the CPS in Kampala.
On why Sserwanja is a wanted man, Kampala Metropolitan Area Police commander Moses Kafeero told HRNJ-UGANDA that “it’s a long story.”
URN, a local news agency has reported that the three journalists were picked up from different areas in Kampala last night by operatives from the Internal Security Organisation-ISO.
