Makerere University Vice Chancellor has appointed a five member committee to investigate the activities and conduct of suspended MUASA chairperson, Dr. Deus Kamunyu.
Early this month, Prof. Nawangwe suspended Kamunyu over misconduct which among others included inciting violence at the university.
According to the suspension letter, Nawangwe claims that Dr. Kamunyu, a Lecturer in the Department of Forestry, Biodiversity and Tourism in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) has been engaging in acts that amount to misconduct, including incitement with intent to cause disobedience and/or strikes to undermine the University Administration, acts that bring the University and University Officials into disrepute, intimidation of University Officials, using abusive and/or insulting language, slanderous and malicious attacks, insubordination, making false statements, among others despite several warnings and engagements with him.
In a January 24 letter, Nawangwe appointed Prof. Sarah Kiguli from the School of Medicine to head the committee which also has Prof. Noble Banadda (department of agriculture and bio-systems engineering), Dr.Moses Musinguzi( Dean, school of the built environment), Jane Nabukeera (Directorate of Human Resources) and Esther Kibinga (directorate of legal affairs).
“As required by law and the Human Resources Manual of Makerere University, I am appointing a committee to investigate the activities and conduct of Dr. Deus Muhwezi Kamunyu,” reads in part Prof. Nwangwe’s letter.
Since Kamunyu’s suspension, Prof. Nawangwe has insisted that the MUASA chairperson is responsible for his own transgressions that have continued despite several warnings.
“Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi was dismissed from MUBS for activities that made that institution ungovernable,” Prof.Nawangwe said in an email to staff on Tuesday.
“My predecessor, Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu gave a written warning to Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi for activities that tarnished the reputation of the University and colleagues.”
Prof.Nawangwe said he has on several occasions warned and also counseled Kamunyu over his transgressions adding that the latter refused to heed to his advice.
