Ridgeway Grammar Schools Matugga is part of a network of Schools with campus in Kazo, and Green Campus. The school is located a few metres from Matugga and has developed a pedigree of educating the child to become a wholesome person.

This morning we visited the school and spoke to the proprietor Mr.Evans Senabulya, who gave us insight into their work at the school and what has made the school to be a unique facility for educating children in the area.

Monday Times: Good morning Mr.Evans Senabulya. We are happy to talk to you and thank you for giving us time to speak about Ridgeway Grammar Schools Matugga. We wanted to know what you really gave going on at Ridgeway Grammar Schools Matugga.

Mr.Evans Senabulya: Well Ridgeway Grammar Schools is part of a group of schools with other campuses in Kazo and Green. Our motto is “we educate to build a nation.” This means that we do not just teach children to pass examinations, but rather we want children to become good citizens.

We are a mixed pre-primary and primary school, with day and boarding.

To be more specific about the Matugga Campus, we have pre-primary and primary classes. Our pre-primary section has baby class, middle class and top class. The primary section has from primary one to primary seven.

We have a rich curriculum. We have both curricular and co-curricular activities. This means that at the curricular level we have academic activities that include classroom teaching. On the co-curricular front, we have various clubs in the school, we have sports, we have music dance and drama and many more.

Academically we are performing very well. Our students pass at primary seven and they get absorbed into competitive secondary schools.

Besides this, we pay a lot attention to discipline, religion, and aspire to develop an all-round child who we describe as a full package individual.

On the side of facilities, we have libraries. Our library format is unique and has well-stocked libraries within each of the classes and gazette a special time for use of the library). We have furnished Computer Labs, we have sports and games (and we have just developed a new site with a playground, we are now embarking on the swimming pool).

For each parent, safety and security of the child is paramount. We have security guards who monitor the inflow and outflow of students. We also have a fence that helps us to keep our activities going on without intruders and to ensure that the children do not get out without permission.

Monday Times: What makes you different from other schools in the area or in Uganda?

Mr.Evans Senabulya: At a business level we are very experienced, because we started the schools in 2002. That makes it 16 years of offering education to our students.

We also have qualified and experienced teachers. We put them through refresher courses as and when we see the need.

We emphasize transformation of the individual into a whole child.

Monday Times: Okay. So what are your opening hours and days?

Mr.Evans Senabulya: For registrations, we open at 8am to 2pm Monday to Saturday. After 2pm we concentrate on interviewing the prospective students.

During school time, it depends on the level. For pre-primary students, they study from 7.30am to 1pm apart from the day care whose parents can drop a child at any time in the morning and picks him or her in the evening.

For the lower primary and the rest of the classes until primary 6, they are dropped at 7 in the morning and picked at 5 in the evening.

All primary 7 students must be in boarding so that they are able to concentrate.

For the day students, we have school vans and delivery. The charges depend on the distance from which we have to pick them from or drop them to.

Monday Times: Compared to other schools how would you rate your fees?

Mr.Evans Senabulya: Our fees in the region where we are not the highest and not the lowest so our fees are affordable.

Monday Times: Can someone who is far away be able to register a child without coming to the school?

Mr.Evans Senabulya: Yes they can, if we make a special arrangement, although We prefer that the parent comes to us. This is important for them to know the school, the area, before bringing the child. We need that interaction where the parent interacts with the teachers.

But in case someone is really far away, we can make that kind of arrangement.

Monday Times: How do you handle a child who does not perform well?

Mr.Evans Senabulya: Not all of us are equal so it is common to find some children not doing well while others are doing well. But we give special attention to those who might be lagging behind. We also ensure that we identify their unique talents and also grow them in that area.

Monday Times: So what is the actual location Ridgeway Grammar Schools Matugga?

Mr.Evans Senabulya: We are in Matugga. When you are coming from Kampala, as you are approaching Matugga town, when you reach Gasline petrol station, then you look on right you see a huge sign post. It has maroon iron sheets. It is on the top of a hill.
