Kenya’s Deputy President William Samoei Ruto has floored Raila Amolo Odinga his main rival in the succession of President Uhuru Kenyatta, in a new poll conducted by Kenya’s Radio Africa Group.
In recent weeks, Ruto and Odinga have been on a war of words as Kenyatta inches closer to endorsing Odinga as his successor.
In the Radio Africa poll, Ruto scores 43% ahead of Odinga’s 14% in a result that has sent shock waves in the Jubilee party.
Ruto who fell apart with Kenyatta is gearing up for an epic battle for the leadership of Kenya, as Kenyatta breaks an African record of being one of the first presidents to support an opposition candidate.
The result also comes days after the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) spearheaded by President Uhuru Kenyatta was thrown out by the Court of Appeal in Kenya.
Kenyatta has been rallying top opposition politicians in Kenya to support Odinga’s bid to stand, which he has called “a Mandela Moment.” So far, he has meet Gideon Moi, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Musalia Mudavadi with the aim of getting them to endorse Odinga.
