Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has launched a drive to unite various political factions in the country. Gaddafi who was recently released from captivity in Zitan has become a coalescing force who might be the best hope for bringing stability to a country riddled by the effects of civil war.
Until his release by a general amnesty, Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi was on death row. He was accused by rebels who overthrew his father, of being responsible for some of the massacres that took place at the end of his father’s tenure.
As divisions and prolonged conflict threatens to reduce Libya to rubble, there is growing sentiment that the solution to the country’s problems might come from experienced hands of the Gaddafi regime.Several are still locked up in jail.
Gaddafi’s lawyer speaking from Tunisia says “Saif Al-Islam is engaged in trying to unite the different political groups to change things for the better. I will not comment on whether he will ever lead Libya, but for now, he wants to see his country get back on track.”
Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown by a Western backed rebel movement that started in the east of the country.
