A committee that has been investigating sex for marks incidents at Makerere University has recommended a wide range of reforms that shall include making sure that lecturers guilty of this act have their salaries cut. The committee led by Professor Sylvia Tamale proposes that among other things, a lecturer engaged in the practice should forfeit two years salary which should be given to the victims of their sexual harassment.
According to news from Makerere, “the five member committee appointed to investigate sexual harassment officially handed over its report to the Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe on Monday, 25th June 2018. Led by the Chairperson, Prof. Sylvia Tamale, the committee appointed on 2nd March 2018 also consisted of the School of Women and Gender Studies’ Assoc. Prof. Consolata Kabonesa, Ag. Principal School of Law-Assoc. Prof. Christopher Mbazira, the College of Education and External Studies’ Assoc. Prof. Betty Ezati, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Assoc. Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi.”
Other proposals include setting up CCTV Cameras across the university to ensure that they would either help with investigations of future sexual harassment or deter lecturers from engaging in the act.
