Detectives at Kira Road Police Station in Kampala are investigating a case in which a suspect was found hanging in the cells of Kikaya Police Station on Friday.
The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said that the suspect allegedly used his trousers to hang himself.
He added that at around 10:00pm, the suspect, identified as Venus Busingye, had been arrested upon receiving information from area residents that he was trespassing in their homes.
“Upon his arrest and questioning, the suspect told us that he did not know how he got inside resident’s premises,” the Police said.
Owoyesigyire, said Busingye was taken to the police by the security guard and a tenant at the house where he was found wandering without any reason.
Mr Owoyesigyire said police interrogated the suspect to understand how he had accessed the home but in vain. Busingye explained that he had just found himself there and couldn’t remember how he had accessed the home.
The police spokesperson said they detained Busingye hoping to interrogate him further Friday morning since it was already late.
“He was searched and he was not found to be a threat to himself at that moment. The belt and everything he had on him was taken away, except his clothes. It was not until [Friday] morning that the OC found him naked and hanging. It is alleged that he used his trouser to kill himself,” Mr Owesigyire said on Friday.
Police have since recorded statements from those who dragged Busingye to Kira Road Police Station as part of the investigations.
He was found dead on Friday morning at around 6:00am.
