Mukono grade one magistrate Mariam Nalugya Semwanga on Thursday remanded a 46-year-old Corporal David Ssali to Luzira prison for allegedly shooting to death Ronald Ssebulime last month.
Prosecution led by Racheal Namutebi told court that on March 24, 2019, Ssali a resident of Namungona, Lubaga division who is also a police officer attached to Naggalama Police Station, unlawfully caused the death of Ronald Ssebulime.
Prosecution also told court that Ssali committed the offence at Nagojje trading centre in Mukono District.
Magistrate Nalugya did not allow Ssali to take plea, saying the offence is capital in nature and can only be heard in High Court. She adjourned the case to April 30 for further mention.
On April 4, Ssebulime’s family lawyers Counsel Muwanda Nkunyingi an advocate at Muwanda & co advocates had asked the public to arrest ICT Minister Idah Nantaba since police had failed to trace her.
Counsel Nkunyingi said: “As a family, we are happy to see that at least the suspect in the case has been brought to court.”
He, however, expressed concerns about where the other suspects are.
“They were many patrol officers but they have only brought one. Where are the rest?” Mr. Nkunyingi said.
The lawyer was happy that the charges against the suspect were at least just something he can work with considering the fact that Mr. Ssebulime is dead.
CPL Ssali has been remanded till April, 30.
Ssebulime was shot dead on Sunday, March 24, at Nagojje Trading Center in Kayunga District.
He was laid to rest at his home in Mubende on Wednesday, March 27 amidst a call to have the police officer that pulled the trigger and the state brought to book for their extrajudicial actions.
