Controversial social commentator Tamale Mirundi has lambasted church leaders for demanding that President Yoweri Museveni names his successor. Speaking on a local television station Christmas day, Mirundi said that the church should remember its own methods of choosing its next leader and leave the constitution to sort out the next successor.

“We have a constitution that clearly stipulates that the next president shall be chosen through the ballot. So on which grounds does the church demand for a successor from the president? Successors are ordained in families or in monarchies. Uganda is not a family enterprise, nor is it a monarchy,” Mirundi said.

Uganda will go to the polls in 2021, which is President Museveni wins, will extend his rule to 40 years by the end of that term.He has repeatedly said that the matter of succession is enshrined in the constitution.
