Two Ugandan cops have been arrested for reportedly soliciting bribes from truck drivers and exposing themselves to COVID-19 infections at Malaba border post.

The two officers attached to Malaba Border station who are allegedly seen in the video touching trucks’ door handles and collecting money from truck drivers have been identified as No. 58976 PC Muwoya Fred and No. 62176 PC Masereka Steven.

“The two have been clearly identified, arrested and detained at Malaba Police station on charges of doing an act likely to cause spread of an infectious disease C/S 171 of PCA vide Malabe SD Ref: 30/25/04/2020 and disciplinary of discreditable conduct,” said an police source who spoke on condition of anonymity to protect his job.

The district police commander, Rogers Chebene, said the two officers have also been placed under quarantine as the investigations into the matter continues.

“When you look at the video, it’s not very clear whether they were extorting money or they were just on their routing duty checkups but the investigation will highlight,” he said.

The officers are most likely to face charges of attempting to cause the spread of an infectious disease.
