Two Ugandan nationals Geoffrey Tindyebwa,44 and Evans Tindyebwa believed to be brothers have been arrested at Mombasa with fake US currency totaling to $94,000 (Ugshs357m).
The two were picked up on Tuesday November 19, 2019 at Pundamilia hotel, Bamburi Division in Kisauni Sub-county, Mombasa while cruising a Mercedes Benz and are being held at Mombasa Central Police station.
No other details were divulged. Their car was also confiscated. It is not clear what the duo was doing in Mombasa but Kenyan authorities say, they were tipped off by citizens and the duo might have entered the country by road on Monday.
“At around 5:30 pm, we received a tip-off from members of the public, we raided the hotel and arrested the two suspects with those large chunks of fake money,” Rashid Yakub, the Coast Regional Police Commander announced.
He noted that the suspects would be taken to court on Wednesday and charged with illegal entry and being in possession of fake currency.
Hosting the port where three-quarters of goods destined for Uganda dock, Mombasa hosts many Ugandans who go there mostly for business. The buzz of activity makes it a virgin for fraudsters.
Fake currency, stolen containers and car-hijacks especially on Mombasa-Nairobi road are common.
