Uganda Communications Commission has blocked access to a number of Rwandan websites over publishing malicious propaganda deemed as ‘hate campaign’ particularly targeting President Yoweri Museveni, Uganda’s top security officials and intelligence agencies.

Among the websites blocked for publishing harmful content include VirungaPost.com, The New Times Rwanda, Igihe.com, Rushyasha, among others.

UCC Public Relations Officer Ibrahim Bbosa confirmed the blockade noting that several other sites, not necessarily Rwandan were blocked.

He further explained the Rwanda websites were informed of the development which he says will be a ‘temporary measure’ in light of the ‘Memorandum of Understanding of Luanda’ signed on Wednesday between President Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame to resolve the diplomatic tension between Uganda and Rwanda.

Bbosa said UCC contacted Internet Service Providers to block the sites.

“We wrote a letter to the operators instructing them to block the websites,” Bbosa said adding that the websites were informed about the development.

According to reports, a number of Ugandan websites were blocked by Rwandan authorities as early as March this year following the closure of the Rwanda border to Uganda on February 27.

‘Memorandum of Understanding of Luanda’ signed on Wednesday by Rwanda and Uganda seeks to foster peace and security, revive bilateral trade, ensure peaceful co-existence of citizens in both countries and co-operation between intelligence bodies
