The United States Agency for International Development [USAID] has boosted Village Health Teams (VHT) in Busoga sub-region with 967 bicycles to improve health services in communities.

VHTs beneficiaries are in the districts of Bugiri, Busia,  Namayingo,  Kaliro, Kamuli, Iganga and Mayuge.

Nathan Tumwesigye  the chief of Regional Health Intergration that  enhances services in East and Central Uganda said the bicycles will facilitate transport  to VHTs to strengthen community connections in health services delivery.

Dr Steven Kiirya the District health officer, warned the beneficiaries against using the bicycles for boda-boda business.

He was speaking at the final distribution of the bicycles at a function held at Bugiri district headquarters.

Kiirya said “this donation will help our office to improve on awareness of health services given the quick transport of the bicycles.”

Village Health Teams are meant to serve as the primary, village-level health contact for all villages in Uganda, the equivalent of a low-level health center.  Community members are able to overcome barriers to healthcare access based solely on their motivation to improve the lives of their friends and family.
