The Executive Director of Uganda Media Centre Ofwono Opondo who doubles as NRM spokesperson has come out strongly to attack religious leaders who he says are undermining President Yoweri Museveni for the ongoing constitutional amendments.

Opondo who was audibly incensed told this newspaper that the religious leaders were taking the president for granted.

“President Museveni is a law abiding citizen. He has gone through the constitutional processes required to amend the constitution. If he was an unlawful person, he would not have followed these processes,” Opondo said.

The government spokesperson also said that the religious leaders who are attacking the president should remember the days when they could not speak.

“Who does not remember what happened to Archbishop Janaan Luwum? These clerics should not forget that the NRM government brought the current religious freedom that they enjoy,”Opondo added.

Several clerics came out on Christmas day to castigate President Yoweri Museveni and his government for amending the constitution to remove age-limit. The amendment also extends the term of parliament to seven years.

President Museveni has not responded to any of the clerics, but his spokesperson Ofwono Opondo is fully occupied with retaliating to what he called vitriolic attacks on the president.
